Flexpa: Wrapped - 2024 Year in Review

An overview of Flexpa's 2024 achievements and improvements. Covers network expansions, consent flows, and record processing enhancements.

At JPM this year? Join us in person in San Francisco on January 15, 2025 for Medplum & Flexpa: Devtools for research, commercialization and more in life sciences. We'll show you how to build specialized healthcare applications in life sciences. Register for an invite and let us know that you want to come to this engineering focused event.

As we wrap up 2024, we're excited to share the technical milestones and achievements that have shaped Flexpa's evolution. This year has been transformative for Flexpa, with significant improvements across our three core products: Network, Consent, and Records. Let's dive into what we've built.

Network: Expanding Coverage & Setting Standards

Claims data access begins with comprehensive network coverage. In 2024, we focused on both expanding our network and improving data quality across it.

We achieved our long-standing goal of 85%+ CMS lives coverage, establishing the largest network of payer FHIR endpoints in the industry. This expansion included integrating with five "Big Blues" through HCSC, covering TX, NM, MT, OK, and IL. Several major payers selected us as their production testing partner, validating our technical approach.

We released two editions of our 2024 State of the Payer Patient Access API Report and presented these results to the CARIN Alliance.

For developers, we simplified integration by releasing our Node SDK package on NPM. We also contributed accepted changes to HL7's FHIR Infrastructure Working Group accepted our first change request, helping shape industry standards.

Consent: Improving the Authorization Experience

Building trust through transparent and efficient authorization flows remained a key focus. We're proud to be building a high conversion rate consent flow, demonstrating that healthcare data access can be both secure and user-friendly.

Major consent improvements included:

  • Releasing our Multiple Use tier for continuous authorized access so that a patient can consent to data access once for a period of time
  • Standardizing access tokens to 24-hour expiration across all payers
  • Adding user object mapping for improved patient tracking, so that you can map your own user identifiers to Flexpa consents
  • Introducing skipExplainer parameter for streamlined authorization flows
  • Launching multi-language support with interfaces in English, Spanish, and Korean

We enhanced visibility into the authorization process by adding new resource type tracking and expanding our user validation coverage to over 60% of connected health plans. These improvements help developers better understand and optimize their integration.

Records: Processing Healthcare Data at Scale

2024 marked significant achievements in data processing capabilities. We processed over 50 million FHIR Resources while improving sync reliability to 95% success rate with sub-60 second completion times.

Key technical improvements included:

  • Releasing Version 2 of our API with new caching infrastructure to optimize data retrieval
  • Implementing standardized data retention policies
  • Adding granular resource type filtering capabilities
  • Adding payer-to-payer data transfer capabilities
  • Improving data segmentation between subscriber and dependent accounts
  • Releasing LLM FHIR Eval preview for measuring interoperability model performance

We've also made significant strides in data standardization:

  • Implemented automatic provider name standardization for NPI codes
  • Added medication name standardization for NDC codes
  • Expanded adjudication code normalization to include itemized fields

To help developers better understand and work with healthcare data, we published comprehensive guides including our Financial Data Guide. These resources help teams navigate the complexities of healthcare data integration.

We were pleased to attend CMS Connectathon 5 and test our implementation of Payer to Payer exchange as part of the upcoming CMS-0057 mandate. We also presented on our FHIR resource synchronization efforts at both FHIR DevDays and FHIR North.

Looking Ahead

These achievements represent significant steps toward our mission of refactoring healthcare. None of this would be possible without our customers, partners, and the broader healthcare interoperability community who continue to push the boundaries of what's possible with healthcare data.

As we look to 2025, we're excited to continue building and improving. We're especially excited to support our payer partners in their development of Payer to Payer data exchange, the dawn of Individual Access Services (IAS), participating in HL7 working groups such as FAST Consent, and the broader efforts of the CARIN Alliance to promote patient access.
